A designated City of Art and History, Vannes is located at the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan, in southern Brittany, on the Marle estuary. Begin by admiring the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Brittany, which offer a charming walk along the Garenne, a path that runs alongside them, dotted with gardens and pretty wash houses. After exploring the port, with its tree-lined quays, including the Quai de la Rabine, pass through the 17th-century Saint-Vincent Gate, built to connect the port and the historic quarter. You enter the old town via a street lined with old buildings, private mansions, and half-timbered houses. Continue up to the Place des Lices, where the 1912 market halls await. Dedicated to food products, they are open Tuesday through Sunday mornings, as well as all day Saturday. As for events, the Vannes Historical Festival takes place in mid-July. Jazz is featured during the Jazz en Ville festival in July and August. Vannes is an ideal starting point for exploring the Gulf of Morbihan by boat: some forty islands, not counting islets, are located there, each with its own unique character. Among them are Arz, Île aux Moines, Houat, and Hoëdic.
From Vannes SNCF train station: 15 minutes on foot.
From Vannes-Golfe du Morbihan airport: 20 minutes by car.
