The 5th arrondissement of Paris is very heterogeneous: it includes of course the Latin Quarter, and therefore houses a very large student population, but also the Pantheon and its rue Soufflot, one of the most chic and expensive in Paris, as well as Gallo-Roman remains which make the whole area an extremely touristy sector.
The famous Latin Quarter is a lively student district, one of the oldest in Paris. Its name likely comes from the fact that, as a university area, teaching was conducted in Latin (the Sorbonne was founded in the 13th century by Robert de Sorbon), which meant that students also had to speak Latin among themselves. (France before 1905 had many dialects and patois that could be incomprehensible to someone from another region).
