"Las Canteras Beach is a long stretch of sand, occupying some 3,800 meters of coastline, which extends along the bay.
Las Canteras is one of the best urban beaches in the country and the world, as it's a great place to be almost year-round. It's the capital's place to relax, where time stands still, and you can play sports any day of the week, in a swimsuit, bikini, goggles and snorkel, paddleboard (beach rackets), or surfboard.
It's also a major marine life reserve. Its seabed is home to a thousand types of fish. On land, it's a haven for walkers, fishermen, and surfers. And it has a special feature. This feature is what locals call "La Barra," a long rock formation that extends not far from the sand and protects a large part of the beach from the tides, transforming it into a natural saltwater pool when the tide is low. A curious line of stones makes the bay the best place on this side of the globe for swimming, as the salty sea makes it easy to float and, with swimming goggles, gives the impression of being inside a large aquarium.
And if you're up for a walk, we recommend the long promenade that winds along the sand, passing cafes and ice cream parlors.
