A City of Art and History, Vannes is located at the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan, in southern Brittany, on the Marle estuary. Already fortified by the Romans, the city developed within its ramparts in the medieval period, then outside in the 17th century, with the construction of numerous private mansions. Residence of the Dukes of Brittany, Vannes has a beautiful historic center, with 171 half-timbered houses! You can visit it as part of a guided tour, aboard a small train, or completely independently. You will begin by admiring the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Brittany, which give rise to a charming walk along the Garenne, a path that runs alongside them, punctuated by gardens and pretty wash houses. After exploring the port, with its tree-lined quays including the Quai de la Rabine, take the 17th-century Porte Saint-Vincent, built to connect the port and the historic district: you enter the old town via a street lined with old buildings, mansions, and half-timbered houses. Go back up to the Place des Lices where the 1912 covered market awaits you. Dedicated to food products, they welcome you on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, as well as all day Saturday.
