Welcome!
A transit point at the crossroads of five Alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town in the 14th century. A Dauphiné town, home to important fairs, it is the capital of the Escartons. Located at the convergence of five valleys—Haute-Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes, and Cerveyrette—the town of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical location.
The radiating structure of these valleys offered the city relatively easy external access very early on: towards Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and present-day Italy.
This dense communications network has long made Briançon a land of passages, an important crossroads in the heart of the Alpine massif, offering the best conditions for the movement of people, the traffic of goods and the exchange of cultures. Easily accessible from the Serre-Chevalier resort, you can enter the highest fortified city in Europe through the Porte de Pignerol, at an altitude of 1,326m and be welcomed by the Heritage Service, which offers you varied guided tours at 3 p.m. every day, led by guide-lecturers approved by the Ministry of Culture, in French, English, Italian (German and Spanish for groups).
