A crossroads of five Alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town as early as the 14th century. A Dauphiné town and the site of important fairs, it was the capital of the Escartons. Situated at the convergence of five valleys – the Upper Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes, and Cerveyrette – the town of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical position.
