Also known as Clichy-la-Garenne, the town of Clichy is a commune bordering Paris. Originating as a Gallo-Roman villa, the village gradually expanded while retaining its authentic character. Heavily wooded until the Middle Ages, it was during this period that the town's name changed to Clichy-la-Garenne, a reference to the numerous royal hunts that took place there. The French Revolution marked a turning point in the town's economic activities, leading to a boom in laundresses and washerwomen. The famous "Goulue" of the Moulin Rouge was one of Clichy's laundresses. Industrialization took hold in the town at the beginning of the 19th century with the arrival of the Maës crystal factory and the Appert glassworks, followed in 1950 by Citroën. However, Clichy has not lost its "village" character and intends to preserve it between modernity and traditions.
