The 18th arrondissement is located in the north of Paris and includes the Goutte d'Or and Montmartre neighborhoods. Montmartre is one of the highest hills in Paris, and the view from the top is well worth the trip. Home to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, a stronghold of the Paris Commune in the 19th century, Montmartre later became the neighborhood of many artists, including Picasso, Dalí, Duchamp, Toulouse-Lautrec, and many others. The 18th arrondissement is therefore very diverse, integrating ethnic enclaves with a more bourgeois area, or vice versa. The Boulevard de Clichy, near Place Pigalle, has many pleasant cafés and bars, giving the neighborhood a certain vibrancy and a touch of respectability.
