Bischheim is a town in Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region, less than 10 km north of Strasbourg.
The municipal territory, quite modest (4.4 km²), has the peculiarity of being divided into two contiguous parts. It is bordered to the east by the Île river and is also crossed by the Marne-Rhine canal.
Although it still contains wooded areas in the northeast, the area is heavily urbanized. Bischheim now has more than 17,000 inhabitants.
Already inhabited during the Neolithic period, the local territory was owned by the Bishop of Reims in the 5th century, then passed under the control of the Bishop of Strasbourg in the 12th. In the 15th century, the fief was sold to the Boecklin family of Boecklinsau, who became lords of Bischheim. Annexed to the Kingdom of France in 1681, the town experienced significant growth during the second half of the 19th century with the establishment of railway workshops. This activity has continued, as Bischheim still has a major SNCF maintenance center dedicated to the TGV high-speed trains. A TGV 001 prototype engine, whose tests took place in the town in 1972, is on display at the town entrance. Integrated into the Strasbourg urban community in 1966, the town also has industrial and commercial zones. However, its historic center has retained an authentic Alsatian charm and interesting heritage features. Furthermore, a leisure area has been developed on the site of a former gravel pit. Added to this is a vibrant community and cultural scene, making Bischheim an interesting stop for anyone discovering Alsace.
