A City of Art and History, Nîmes is renowned for its ancient heritage and its particularly festive southern atmosphere. The remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater, dating from the late 1st and early 2nd centuries, is 133 meters long and 101 meters wide and can accommodate up to 24,000 spectators! Open to visitors, these vast arenas regularly host shows, including the famous Camargue bullfights and bullfights.
Another landmark of the city of Nîmes is the Maison Carrée, a superb Roman temple dating from the end of the 1st century, with columns topped with Corinthian capitals. Opposite the Maison Carrée stands the Carré d'Art, a modern building that houses a Museum of Contemporary Art. The city of Nîmes also has a Museum of Fine Arts, which exhibits French and foreign paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries.
In addition to these many attractions, there is the unmissable discovery of the Jardin de la Fontaine, a wonderful romantic park, classified as a Remarkable Garden, laid out in the 18th century around the Nemausus spring and the ancient remains of the Temple of Diana and the Magne Tower. A very relaxing walk through these places reveals a French garden in the lower part, and a succession of Mediterranean plants, pines and cedars in the upper part. From the Magne Tower, at the top of Mont Cavalier, the view over the city's rooftops is superb!
Before leaving the capital of the Gard, don't miss a stroll through the picturesque streets of the old town and a drink in one of the pretty squares, such as Place du Marché, Place aux Herbes or Place de l'Horloge.
In terms of events, the Pentecost Fair, held in May, is a major five-day festival where the bull reigns supreme. In addition to its bullfights, the Nîmes Fair is also an opportunity to celebrate with music, to the rhythm of the bandas, in the streets of the city center.
