But its rebellious spirit was not to the King's liking, and it succumbed to Richelieu's siege in the 16th century. Despite its lost independence, La Rochelle has continued its economic growth over the centuries, right up to the present day, thanks to its proximity to the ocean, which remains at the center of maritime trade.
