## Neighborhood
The Vieux-Marché district is one of the most iconic and historic places in Rouen, Normandy, France. It is located in the heart of the city and is a central location for Rouen's history, architectural heritage, and social life.
1. History
The Vieux-Marché is particularly famous for its connection to Joan of Arc. It was on this square in 1431 that the famous French heroine was sentenced to death and burned alive after her trial. A small symbolic stake marks the exact spot where this tragic event took place. This square therefore embodies a large part of the collective memory of France and Rouen.
2. Place du Vieux-Marché
The Place du Vieux-Marché is a lively meeting place in Rouen. Today, it is surrounded by half-timbered buildings typical of Normandy, giving the neighborhood a unique medieval atmosphere. These half-timbered houses are often well preserved and now house cafés, restaurants, and shops. The terraces on the square are particularly popular for enjoying the atmosphere.
3. Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc Church
The Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc Church, built in 1979, is a modern monument that contrasts with the traditional architecture of the surrounding area. This church was built in homage to Joan of Arc and has a bold design in the shape of an inverted boat, reminiscent of both Viking longboats and Normandy's maritime history. Inside, there are magnificent stained glass windows salvaged from the former Saint-Vincent Church, which was destroyed during World War II.
4. Atmosphere and social life
The Vieux-Marché district is one of the liveliest places in Rouen, thanks in particular to its many restaurants, bars, and terraces. It is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. In summer, the terraces are particularly lively, and in winter, the Christmas markets bring a festive atmosphere.
5. Gastronomy
In addition to its historical sites, the district is renowned for its gastronomy. There are several establishments where you can sample typical Norman dishes, such as the famous apple tart, camembert, and oysters. Many traditional restaurants offer dishes made with local produce.
6. Market and shops
Although the Place du Vieux-Marché has lost its original role as a central market (most markets are now held in other parts of the city), it remains an important place for local shops. The market is often still active on certain days, offering fresh, local produce to Rouen residents and visitors alike.
The Vieux-Marché district is therefore both a vibrant reminder of Rouen's medieval past and a modern hub for cultural, gastronomic, and social activities. It is a must-see for anyone who wants to discover the city's history while enjoying its contemporary vibrancy.
## Transportation
The Gros-Horloge is one of Rouen's most iconic monuments, located in the historic center of the city. Several means of transportation are available to get around Rouen and its surroundings:
1. Public transportation (bus and metro)
Rouen is served by a bus and metro network operated by the Astuce company.
Rouen Metro: This is actually a tramway, known as a light metro, which runs through the city. There are two lines (T1 and Appartement) that pass near the city center, with stations such as Théâtre des Arts and Palais de Justice, both about a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Gros-Horloge.
Bus: Several bus lines serve the center of Rouen. Stops near the Gros-Horloge include Théâtre des Arts and Place du Vieux-Marché, which are served by many bus lines, such as lines F1, F2, and 11.
2. Bicycle (Cy’clic)
Rouen also has a bike-sharing service called Cy’clic. There are several bike stations near the Gros-Horloge, such as those located at Théâtre des Arts or on Place du Vieux-Marché.
3. Taxis
Taxis are available throughout the city and are fairly easy to find near the historic center, particularly around the Place du Vieux-Marché or major thoroughfares such as Rue Jeanne d'Arc. Alternatively, apps such as Uber are also available in Rouen.
4. Train
The Rouen Rive Droite train station is located about a 10-minute walk from the Gros-Horloge. From this station, you can take trains to Paris, Le Havre, Caen, and other cities in the region.
