San Nari is the Provençal name for Saint Nazaire, a Roman martyr from the 1st century AD, to whom a place of worship was dedicated in the Middle Ages in the territory of present-day Sanary. A hamlet on the edge of the Mediterranean, sheltered by the seigneurial tower erected around 1300, Saint-Nazaire flourished in the 16th century.
The port of Sanary is recognized as one of the most typical and authentic on the French Mediterranean coast. A very old natural harbor, located in the heart of the city, it showcases around a hundred heritage boats, the oldest dating back to 1895, including the famous Provençal "pointus" boats.
A village facing the sea, Sanary was also a refuge for the greatest names in German culture: Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann, Klaus Mann, Erika Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Arnold Zweig, Franz Hessel… resided in Sanary-sur-Mer between 1933 and 1942.
The sea esplanade, the lighthouses, the jetties... So many walks that offer picturesque views of the port and the village.
You will also love its large night market every evening in July and August.
