A seaside resort in Calvados, in the Normandy region, Courseulles-sur-Mer is located on the shores of the English Channel, about twenty kilometers from Caen and its Memorial. The small town is located in the heart of the Côte de Nacre, not far from Bernières-sur-Mer, Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, or Fontaine-Henry and its castle.
Inhabited since the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by the Roman coins found there, the town of Courseulles-sur-Mer has particularly distinguished itself in history during the Second World War and the D-Day landings. On June 6, 1944, the town's beaches were part of the Juno Beach sector, a capture assigned to Canadian troops. The port liberated in Normandy, it experienced significant activity until the creation of the artificial port of Arromanches a little further along the coast.
Now restored to its former glory, Courseulles-sur-Mer, immortalized in a song by the singer Oldelaf, is popular with tourists for its charm, beaches, and architectural and historical heritage. It's an excellent base from which to explore the most beautiful sites in the department or the neighboring Manche region.
