Situated at an altitude of 1,326 meters, at the confluence of five valleys, Briançon is the highest town in France. This city of art and history, fortified by Vauban in the 18th century, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Briançon boasts a remarkable collection of military structures, built between the 18th and 20th centuries to improve the city's defense system.
This is how, during the visit, we discover the upper town or Vauban citadel, the very heart of Briançon, dominated by the castle fort, and the various surrounding structures such as the Salettes fort, the Trois Têtes fort and the Randouillet fort.
Once through the Pignerol gate, the picturesque old town reveals to its visitors many testimonies of its past. The 18th-century Notre-Dame collegiate church, the 14th-century Cordeliers church, the old residences rising on either side of the sloping streets, the charming Place d'Armes surrounded by pretty, colorful facades evoking Provence, or the fountains and sundials, are all discoveries that await architecture lovers.
When winter comes, Briançon becomes a popular destination for ski enthusiasts, with its ski area being part of the famous Serre Chevalier resort.
