Cinema was born in the 8th arrondissement, invented by brothers Louis and Auguste Lumière. The Lumière Institute traces the birth of cinema in Lyon.
Notable places are:
- The Saint Maurice church which was built in 1845 when Baron des Tournelles offered a plot of his land to the archbishop responsible for preparing the project.
- The Lumière School Group and the Saint Maurice School: The Lumière School opened in 1890 in a spacious space, followed in 1909 by that of Saint Maurice, financed by the wealthy families of the neighborhood.
- The Bandstand: The president of Lyre Monplaisir called on the city at the beginning of the 20th century to build the Bandstand. The Lumière family supported this request and a fundraising campaign was launched. The bandstand was built in 1912 and disappeared in 1958 during the redevelopment of the square. The arrival of the metro in the district in 1987 led to a new redevelopment and the reinstallation of the bandstand on the same site.
- Place Ambroise-Courtois: it is named in homage to this radical socialist, friend of Édouard Herriot and municipal councilor of Lyon, who was assassinated by the militia in January 1944.
- The Lumière Institute: a cinema house with a dual vocation of heritage conservation and dissemination since its creation in 1982.
