The prefecture of Calvados and capital of the former Lower Normandy, the city of Caen paid a heavy price in 1944 during the Battle of Normandy. The lavish past of this city, recognized as a Town of Art and History, has nevertheless left behind some -rate architectural treasures.
Caen Castle, the residence of the Dukes of Normandy, is another of the city's highlights. Built in the 11th century by the illustrious William the Conqueror, it served as a veritable fortress during the Hundred Years' War. It was restored after World War II after suffering significant damage, and today houses the Museum of Fine Arts, the Normandy Museum, the Great Exchequer State Room, the Church of Saint George, and a herb garden. Its rampart walk offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the ramparts.
The Caen Memorial, a City of History for Peace, inaugurated in 1988 by President François Mitterrand, is an international educational and cultural center built to commemorate the Battle of Normandy. With 5,600 m² of permanent exhibitions, its rooms, equipped with all modern technology, evoke the period from 1918 to the present day, with an emphasis on the Second World War and the post-war period. In this must-see museum in the city, you can follow D-Day on a giant screen, as experienced by both sides, and admire the gallery of famous Nobel Peace Prize winners.
At the heart of the château and sculpture park, a contemporary building houses the Museum of Fine Arts, which houses one of France's most important collections of 16th and 17th-century European paintings. Here, you can admire works from France, Italy, Holland, and the Netherlands.
Caen offers many other gems, such as the Escoville mansion, a superb Renaissance residence built in the 16th century by a wealthy lord, and which now houses the Tourist Office. You can also admire the Saint-Pierre church and its numerous sculptures, the Jardin des Plantes, which is home to many rare specimens in the heart of the city, or the "Vaugueux" district where Edith Piaf's family lived. You should also take the time to stroll through the medieval streets or the pretty marina that adorns the city center.
