Montreuil comes from the Latin "monasterolium," meaning small monastery. The record of the village's existence is found in an ordinance of the Merovingian king Thierry IV. The village grew in importance from the reign of Philip I onward, thanks to its vineyards and its appeal as a resort for the high clergy and nobles. The kings of France frequently visited. Saint Louis came to celebrate Easter there, and Charles V and his wife, Jeanne de Bourbon, were baptized there in 1375. The presence of these high-ranking figures allowed the inhabitants of Montreuil to pay less tax and benefit from various privileges. From the 16th century onward, Montreuil declined, as the kings of France abandoned Vincennes for Fontainebleau and Saint-Germain. After the French Revolution, Montreuil was renamed Montreuil-sous-Bois. The town gradually industrialized and urbanized until it became the city it is today.
