A crossroads of five Alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town as early as the 14th century. A Dauphiné town and the site of important fairs, it was the capital of the Escartons. Situated at the convergence of five valleys – the Upper Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes, and Cerveyrette – the town of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical position.
The radiating structure of these valleys offered the city relatively easy external access very early on: towards Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and present-day Italy.
This dense communications network has long made Briançon appear as a land of passage, an important crossroads in the heart of the Alpine massif, offering the best conditions for the movement of people, the traffic of goods and the exchange of cultures.
Easily accessible from the Serre-Chevalier resort, you can enter the highest fortified city in Europe through the Pignerol gate, at an altitude of 1,326m, and be welcomed by the Heritage Service, which offers various guided tours at 3pm every day, led by tour guides approved by the Ministry of Culture, in French, English, Italian (German and Spanish for groups).
From Briançon train station: 8 minutes by car.
From Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport: 2 hours 40 minutes by car.
