Sauveterre is a commune in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region, 10 km north of Avignon.
Its territory of 13 km² is bordered to the east by the course of the Rhône on the right bank and therefore borders the department of Vaucluse. It also includes the north of the island of Barthelasse, formed by two arms of the river.
Although the ancient city of the popes belongs to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Sauveterre falls under the Greater Avignon community.
The proximity of the river means a rich biodiversity: the town has a Natura 2000 site and three protected natural areas.
Although the population is concentrated in the town to the north and the hamlet of Four to the west, Sauveterre still has a rural environment, covered in particular by agricultural areas and arable land (35% of its surface area) and forests (13%).
Remains attest to a human presence from the Celtic era and then during Roman Antiquity. In the Middle Ages, the parish church of Four and then that of Sauveterre were donated by the Bishop of Avignon to the Abbey of Saint-André in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (12th century).
It was not until 1850 that the commune of Sauveterre was created (and thus the former parishes united), the north of the territory being detached from Roquemaure.
Today, with a population of around 2,000, Sauveterre boasts a rich heritage and a land conducive to fruit growing, olive oil production, and landscapes evidently marked by the Rhône Valley. Close to Avignon and its treasures, hiking enthusiasts will appreciate it!
