Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is a commune in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, located on the peninsula of the same name, which is connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Sablettes. It is located about fifteen kilometers south of Toulon, whose harbor it partially "closes." The commune was officially created in 1950. Until then, the village was part of La Seyne-sur-Mer.
Originally made up of islets, the territory became a single island in the Middle Ages, the island of Sépet, then was connected to the continent in the 17th century. The history of Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is closely linked to that of the nearby naval military base of Toulon. with the installation of an infirmary then a military hospital, then a fort and batteries for defensive purposes and finally a lighthouse. Today, the French Navy still occupies three-quarters of the municipal territory with in particular a naval training center, a diving base and a mechanics school.
From a civil perspective, once focused on agriculture, activity has focused on tourism, with the creation of a marina and the preservation of a quality coastal environment where beaches and pine forests are appreciated. The town, which has some 5,800 inhabitants, also demonstrates a certain cultural dynamism. It is therefore a legitimately renowned holiday resort.
