Welcome!
The capital of Charente-Maritime, La Rochelle is famous for its picture-postcard Old Port. Guarded by the Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour Saint-Nicolas, the Old Port has inspired many artists. After a stroll along the quays, visitors are invited to wander the pretty streets of the old town. Private mansions, Renaissance residences, and old half-timbered houses line the area. The various boutiques along the pedestrian streets and arcaded streets truly have something to satisfy shopaholics.
The Renaissance main building of the town hall, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, features a Flamboyant Gothic-style surrounding wall. A building not to be missed! The city tour continues with the Museum of Fine Arts, the New World Museum dedicated to the history of relations between La Rochelle and the Americas, the Natural History Museum, and the Orbigny-Bernon Museum, exhibiting collections of earthenware, engravings, and paintings.
The vast Port des Minimes, entirely dedicated to pleasure boating, attracts sailors from around the world. Not far from the Vieux Port, the La Rochelle Aquarium allows marine enthusiasts to discover the flora and fauna of the world's seas and oceans.
To relax after visiting the fortified city, nothing beats a break on the beaches of La Rochelle.
Many events bring the city to life: the International Sailing Weeks in May and June; the La Rochelle International Film Festival and the famous Francofolies musical event in July; the Grand Pavois, an international floating boat show, in September; and the Jazz Festival between the two towers in October.
