Welcome!
From its past, Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this City of Art and History of the Var has an important historical and architectural heritage. The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheater, a theater, and an aqueduct of which some pillars and arcades remain. Dating from the end of the 1st century, the arenas could accommodate nearly 12,000 spectators who came to watch the gladiatorial combats! In the old town, the Episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th centuries, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It brings together the beautiful Saint-Léonce Cathedral, with a Romanesque-style bell tower and two naves linked by several arcades. But also the octagonal baptistery dating from the 5th century, one of the oldest in France, the episcopal palace transformed into a town hall, as well as the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling was decorated with real or imaginary figures and animals. The archaeological museum adjoining the cloister houses magnificent ancient sculpted pieces from excavations carried out in the Roman city.
