Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments from its past. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this City of Art and History in the Var region boasts a significant historical and architectural heritage.
The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheater, a theater, and an aqueduct, of which a few pillars and arches remain. Dating from the end of the 1st century, the arena could accommodate nearly 12,000 spectators who came to watch gladiatorial combats!
In the old town, the Episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th centuries, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It includes the beautiful Saint-Léonce Cathedral, with a Romanesque-style bell tower and two naves connected by several arcades. There is also the octagonal baptistery dating from the 5th century, one of the oldest in France, the Episcopal palace converted into a town hall, and the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling was decorated with real or imaginary figures and animals. The archaeological museum adjacent to the cloister houses remarkable ancient sculpted pieces from excavations carried out in the Roman city.
