A popular seaside resort for tourists, Arcachon is located in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in the Gironde department. The main town of the Arcachon Basin, it faces the Atlantic Ocean, bordering La Teste-de-Buch and the resort of Pyla-sur-Mer. The recent town of Arcachon was born from a separation from La Teste-de-Buch in 1857, notably thanks to the creation of a railway line with Bordeaux. The arrival of tourists from the big city thus triggered the creation of an upscale seaside resort. Arcachon also became known over the years for its thermal spa, thalassotherapy, and climatotherapy activities linked to the discovery of the Sainte-Anne des Abatilles spring. Today, Arcachon is still appreciated for its beaches, as well as for its charming old-fashioned Belle Époque architecture.
